Senior Citizen Day
Senior Citizens Day History
Senior Citizen Day aims to honor and support elders. Senior Citizens play an important role in our society as they help us understand the past while teaching us life lessons for the future. Seniors are valued due to their achievements, knowledge, and contributions to society. President Ronald Reagan is credited with the origin of this observance in 1988. There are many businesses that offer discounts for senior citizens on this day.
Senior Citizens Day Facts
- According to prb.org, there were 52 million Americans aged 65 or older in the US in 2018. That number is expected to increase to 95 million by 2060.
- The average life expectancy in the US increased from 68 years in 1950 to 78.6 years in 2017.
- According to prb.org, between 2019 and 2060 the older US population is projected to become more racially and ethnically diverse. The percentage of older non-Hispanic whites is projected to drop from 77% to 55%.

Hope for Haiti's Children - Earthquake update
EARTHQUAKE UPDATE | MONDAY, AUGUST 16, 2021
Dear HFHC friends,
As you may know, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti this past Saturday morning just east of Les Cayes in the southern peninsula. At least 1,200 people have died, with many more deaths expected since hundreds are still missing.
We are in close contact with seven Eglise du Christ congregations in the impacted area, including Chambellan Eglise du Christ -- where HFHC crisis relief funds rebuilt the Christian school/church after Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Thankfully, this building was spared, but there are many homes of members in Chambellan and six other communities in the O'Kay area which have collapsed.
We are thankful to report that none of our HFHC facilities received damage, and all of our sponsored children’s families are ok. However, we have spoken with former HFHC volunteers, HFHC staff member relatives, and friends of this ministry who have lost their homes and are sleeping in the streets. With virtually no government help and no insurance to rebuild, we are asking for your prayers and your financial help.
Today, our Haiti staff is purchasing tarps, solar lights, propane stoves, cast iron skillets, cots, and other essential supplies to transport to those in urgent need. Be assured that your donation will fund the purchase of these goods and will have a direct impact in helping these devastated communities find help and hope in the midst of yet another tragedy. We are so grateful for your generosity.
Donations can be made at www.HopeForHaitisChildren.
